About LabCauldron
LabCauldron helps IB science teachers run the scientific investigation, the research project worth 20% of the final grade in IB Biology, Chemistry and Physics, from first idea to moderation sample.
Why it exists
The investigation is where science teachers carry the most risk. Students tend to repeat the same standard experiments. Teacher marks are later moderated by the IB. Generative AI has made it harder to show that a report is the student's own work. Most of this lands in one busy term.
LabCauldron was built to make that term calmer and fairer for teachers and students alike.
Who built it
LabCauldron was developed by Anum Kazi. It is built and hosted by Webtronaut Innovations, LLC (webtronaut.com).
What it does
- Idea Engine: research ideas for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, for internal assessments and extended essays, matched to the equipment a school owns, its outdoor sites and free open databases.
- Timestamped lab notebook: students log photos, raw data and check-ins as they work, building a clear record of their process.
- Class overview: each student's stage, the department calendar and who needs a follow-up.
- Mark calibration: two teachers blind-mark the same reports and see where they disagree before marks are submitted.
- Moderation panel: students submit their final report; two teachers and an AI examiner mark it blind, then the teachers agree one set of marks, release feedback and can download the official IB scoring sheet.
- Discussion Forum: a space for each class where teachers pose inquiry questions, students answer and help each other, and students can choose to share their feedback once marks are released.
- Private notes: a dated thread between each student and their teacher that becomes part of the authorship record.
- Task builder: turns a department's rubric and a topic into a task sheet and a task-specific rubric for teachers to edit.
What we believe
- The teacher stays in charge. LabCauldron supports professional judgement and never awards marks.
- AI helps teachers and never writes a student's work.
- Students own their work, and schools control their students' data.
- We collect as little information as possible, and we never sell it or use it for advertising.
Who it's for
LabCauldron is designed for teachers of the IB Diploma Programme sciences, usually taught in grades 11 and 12. Students use the notebook under their teacher's direction.
Where it stands
LabCauldron is in an invite-only beta. Teachers create accounts with an invite code, set up their classes and share a class code with their students. Students join with only a first name and a 4-digit PIN. The AI examiner uses Anthropic's Claude to suggest marks for a submitted report; teachers always decide the final marks.
Independence
LabCauldron is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the International Baccalaureate Organization. "IB" and "International Baccalaureate" are trademarks of the International Baccalaureate Organization and are used only to describe the courses LabCauldron supports.
The developer's school is named to identify the developer. Unless a school agrees otherwise in writing, LabCauldron is not operated, sponsored or endorsed by any school, including the developer's school.
